AMBULATORY - OVERVIEW

The construction of the Eastern Apse and Ambulatory (an unusual feature in the Church of Ireland) were only completed in 1955 and consecrated in 1959, following the design of John McGeagh. The Ambulatory is the walk way which runs around the Choir and behind the altar.
The Ambulatory, (Latin - ambulare : to walk), is a feature in many period Romanesque churches which were often pilgrim churches. The pilgrims could walk up a side aisle and around the back of the altar where there may have been one or a series of side-chapels holding the relics of a saint. The pilgrims could then exit by the aisle on the other side of the church without disrupting any act of worship which may have been taking place. The stained glass in the ambulatory is a series of windows representing virtues.
