SANCTUARY - HERDMAN WINDOWS NORTH

This window seeks to depict The Garden of Eden. God's gifts for humankind to enjoy are represented: animals (a lamb), vegetation (a tree), water (a river), fish. These elements carry a double significance: the lamb = food and the Lamb of God, Jesus; the tree = all green things and the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil in the Garden of Eden; water = for drinking and for cleansing from sin through baptism.
Adam and Eve disobeyed God's command not to eat of the Tree of Knowledge - the first sin - and were cast out of the Garden. Jesus came into the world to 'reconcile' God and mankind through his crucifixion and resurrection. The fish was used as a symbol for the Church by early christians
