Prayers for Omagh

Thirty-one candles, one for each of the victims of the Omagh bombing, burned at the base of the Cathedral’s Spire of Hope on August 15.

To mark the 20th anniversary of the bomb in the Co Tyrone town, special prayers were said at services.

Members of the public joined us for services, and many stepped in to light a candle of their own, or to spend time in silent prayer remembering those who died, including unborn twins.

A short service of remembrance was held at 3pm. After prayers and readings, a silence was observed at 3.10pm, the time the Real IRA bomb exploded on a busy Saturday afternoon in Omagh 20 years ago.

As part of this very moving service, which remembered all victims of the Troubles, the Dean of Belfast, the Very Rev Stephen Forde, read the names of the 29 who died.
